January 31 - February 7:
It was all about classic TV around the Lounge this week: Hawaii Five-O, Kolchak: The Night Stalker and Mary Tyler Moore, plus a field trip to the Paley Center (formerly the Museum of Television and Radio), where I saw more Mary Tyler Moore, as well as My World and Welcome to It. Oh, and American Life Television, which I've never forgiven for forsaking Hawaiian Eye and 77 Sunset Strip, is now showing Phyllis and Rhoda on weeknights from 5:00-6:00, so they're grudgingly back in my good graces.
January 24 - January 30:
The Mayor of Sunset Strip (2003)
Rodney Bingenheimer, tons or rock stars
Being an avid KROQ listener from back in the day, this documentary about DJ (among many other things) Rodney Bingenheimer makes me nostalgic for Southern California, driving around, listening to the radio. I don't share Rodney's obsession with fame, but it's a fascinating look into that world nonetheless. And, hey, it features Nancy Sinatra!
We've also been watching our share of classic TV, including Man from U.N.C.L.E. on Monday nights, That Girl, Hawaii Five-O, Columbo and clips of Liberace!
January 17 - January 23:
The Out-of-Towners (1970)
Jack Lemmon, Sandy Dennis
Simultaneously hilarious and frustrating depiction of the indisputable fact that a bad night in New York City is usually epically bad. Of course, Lemmon's character, George Kellerman, insists on making a seemingly endless string of bad decisions, adding to the misery. Highly quotable!
January 10 - January 16:
Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969)
Robert Culp, Natalie Wood, Elliott Gould, Dyan Cannon
I never expected this movie to be as utterly hilarious as it is. A couple visits a retreat, designed to help them get in touch with their feelings, and boy, do they ever! They also begin driving their friends and acquaintances nuts with their oversharing, eventually influencing another couple to get in touch with their feelings, with hysterical consequences. Highly recommended, especially if you like to laugh out loud at the "new age" crowd.
January 3 - January 9:
Christmas in July (1940)
Dick Powell, Ellen Drew
A dreamer's "friends" play a dirty trick on him and make him believe he's won $25,000 in a jingle-writing contest and are powerless to end the gag before it's too late. All ends well for our hapless hero after lots of zany mayhem, thankfully, since he's such a nice guy that you couldn't bear to see him suffer much longer!
