February 24 - March 1:

I confess: all we managed to watch at the Lounge this week was The Mary Tyler Moore Show and WKRP in Cincinnati on American Life, an episode of The Addams Family and an episode of season one of Hawaii Five-O.

February 17 - February 23:

Beach Blanket Bingo (1965)
Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon
As I mentioned last week, I got the Frankie and Annette DVD box set for my birthday and it was/is a great gift! I started with this one, since it was the first in the box. It features Linda Evans as a singer, Paul Lynde as her slimy publicist, skydiving and a mermaid. You know, a typical beach party movie!

Frankie and Johnny (1966)
Elvis Presley, Donna Douglas
I also got an Elvis box set for my birthday--"The MGM Collection"--and this one was in there. Elvis and Donna Douglas are entertainers on a turn-of-the-century (as in 1900, not 2000) riverboat. She fears he loves another woman, but really he's just a compulsive gambler. Hey, at least he's not cheating on her, right?!

February 10 - February 16:

Teenage Diary (1960)
Vonda Kay Van Dyke, Harrell Poarch
It FINALLY came! This incredible film comes on a DVD called "Christian Scare Films, Volume 5," which should give you an idea of where this is headed. High school students Penny and Brad attend a party at a tiki bar, which so enflames their heathen passions that they at least start to sin on the beach. Penny's drunken, yet "Christian," father puts a stop to it by punching Penny and beating Brad so hard he ends up in the hospital. She takes a couple more beatings before she has enough and takes her father's car, heads back to the beach (the scene of the crime) and almost jumps off a cliff. Fortunately she's Saved just in time. The tiki bar scenes in this are the best, but Brad's mother going on and on and on about God's love is pretty amazing, too. Worth every cent of the $10 I paid for it! Trivia: Vonda Kay Van Dyke went on to become Miss America 1965.

The Big Cube (1969)
Lana Turner, George Chakiris
I had no idea this was on DVD, so I was really excited to find it! Lana Turner plays a hammy middle-aged actress who retires from the stage to marry a millionaire. Unfortunately he dies trying to save her after she falls overboard from their sailboat during a storm. Her dim bulb stepdaughter, along with her gold digging ex-(he was tossed out of school for making drugs) medical student fiance, conspire to drive her mad by giving her LSD and, while she's tripping, trying to convince her the death was her fault, thus making her suicidal. The plot gets even MORE (if that's possible) convoluted after the idiot stepdaughter confesses. The '60s costumes and sets are to die for and the nightclub sequences are tres groovy!

February 3 - February 9:

Still no Teenage Diary, which is just as well, since we had no time for viewing this week. I predict we'll have more time next week, with the long weekend and all.
