July 26 - August 1:
Ma and Pa Kettle (1949)
Marjorie Main, Percy Kilbride, Richard Long
The follow up to The Egg and I, in which the Kettles win a fabulous post-war dream home, thanks to Pa's championship tobacco slogan. Just in time, too, as they were about to be evicted from their dilapidated farm.
July 12 - July 25:
I'm not going to lie--this has been a crazy summer, with barely enough time to do the things we have to do, much less watch movies. I did catch most of A Kiss Before Dying (1956) on TCM while I was sewing, which delivers the kind of '50s melodrama I love, and it was fun to see Virginia Leith in something besides The Brain That Wouldn't Die. It was also hilarious to see Robert Wagner play such an evil character.
July 5 - July 11:
The Blob (1958)
Steve(n) McQueen, Aneta Corsaut
The only thing better than The Blob is seeing it in the historic theater featured in the film!
Invasion of the Saucer Men (1957)
Frank Gorshin, Steven Terrell, Gloria Castillo
A young couple's plans for elopement are interrupted by a spaceship full of aliens, who look a lot like Brussels sprouts, and who wreak havoc at the town's prime make out spot. They find themselves accused of drunkenly running over and killing another drunk (they drink A LOT in this town), but it gets straightened out and all's well that ends well. We saw this one on a double bill with The Blob. A Saturday afternoon double feature, sitting in the balcony of a historic theater. What could be more retro?!
A Life of Her Own (1950)
Lana Turner, Ray Milland
A turgid melodrama in which small-town-but-steely Lily arrives in New York City, intent on success as a model. Her first night in town she's set up with a much older man, dances with a guy who only wants one thing and her new friend, a formerly-successful-but-fading model, commits suicide. She becomes the toast of the town, has an affair with a married man who will never leave his wife because he crippled her in a car accident, then eventually seems like she's headed toward a fate similar to her suicidal friend. We never learn what eventually becomes of Lily, but the fact that she didn't rat out her married lover to his handicapped wife shows that perhaps she hasn't lost ALL of her humanity and there's hope for her yet.
