What's not to like about a 1960 potboiler about coeds (that's what they called college women then) on spring break in Fort Lauderdale? Great scenery, great clothes and it's got Barbara Nichols, who's quickly becoming one of my favorite character actresses as an entertainer who does an underwater routine in a tank at a swanky nightclub. A bit of Hollywood trivia: Delores Hart eventually chucked showbiz to become a nun.
June 17 - June 23:
Maxed Out (2006)
I'm in a documentary mood lately. This one is fantastic. James D. Scurlock's look at America's dysfunctional relationship with consumer debt, utter denial about same, and keeping up with the Joneses is just riveting. I really want to pick up this DVD (NOT on a credit card!).
June 10 - June 16:
Kon Tiki (1950)
Thor Heyerdahl's documentary of his and his compatriots' journey from Peru to Polynesia on a bolsa raft, to prove that it was possible without any modern conveniences. Highly entertaining.
Beach Party (1963)
Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon
The original "beach party" film that started the craze! Not surprisingly, the plot is a lot like most of the others--Frankie and Annette conspire to make each other jealous--but we love them here at the Lounge, so it's a formula that works for us!
June 3 - June 9:
Bachelor in Paradise (1961)
Bob Hope, Lana Turner
This title isn't on DVD, so I searched in vain for an airing for months, then finally saw it was going to be on TCM, so it was on our calendar for a couple of months before we FINALLY saw it this week. It's one of my favorite types of films--a zany mid-century tale of sexual confusion and intrigue, this time set in a housing development called Paradise Cove. Hope is a sex researcher/writer, in trouble with the IRS and incognito in "Paradise." The set design in this film was worth the wait alone (it features a sequence in a tiki bar!), but it's also really funny!
