September 23 - October 6:

The Velveteen Lounge Theater this week consisted entirely of cartoons, HGTV and snatches of the Travel Channel and Food Network viewed from my seat on JetBlue and in our hotel room in Vegas! Hopefully some films will actually be watched this week!

September 16 - September 22:

My Man Godfrey (1936)
Carole Lombard, William Powell
It was a week for classics here at the Lounge. I have to admit we've seen this Depression-era tale of a rich girl who needs to collect a forgotten man for a scavenger hunt and ends up falling in love with him after he becomes her family's butler many times before, but it's always a scream. In reality he's not only not a homeless man, but his business acumen saves her family fortune, so it's a good thing they have him around!

The Thin Man (1934)
Myrna Loy, William Powell
This is my absolute favorite movie EVER (well, okay, tied with some of its sequels and Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, also co-starring Myrna Loy), so we watch it a lot and I probably don't need to write it up again. However, I will say that it's never the wrong time to watch it. Since it takes place at Christmastime we'll be watching it at least twice more within the next few months!

September 9 - September 15:

The Mambo Kings (1992)
Armand Assante, Antonio Banderas
The Castillo brothers leave Cuba and come to America searching for success in the music world. Obnoxiously brash Cesar seems to destroy their chances at every turn and poor sensitive Nestor can't do much but brood about his lost love, but they manage to get onto I Love Lucy, anyway. Desi Arnaz, Jr. plays his father, which is a trip, and the music and atmosphere make this film a winner.

Two Family House (2000)
Michael Rispoli, Kelly Macdonald
Another contemporary film set in the '50s. This one tells the story of Buddy, who was discovered by Arthur Godfrey while singing in the Army during WW2, but whose wife would not let him pursue his showbiz dream. He tries to make a go of a number of businesses, but they all fail, to his wife's satisfaction. Fortunately, after eleven years of her nagging, he leaves her for a woman (also a misfit) who believes in him and his dream of opening a tavern.

September 2 - September 8:

That Funny Feeling (1965)
Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin
An actress/cleaning lady wants to impress a guy, so she takes him to a swank apartment she cleans. Little does she know it's his apartment! Zany mayhem ensues. Great costumes, mid-century sets and Nita Talbot as Dee's best friend and roommate in a squalid hovel.

Mad Monster Party (1967)
Boris Karloff, Phyllis Diller
I loved this Rankin-Bass stop-motion animation ditty about a monsters' convention, presided over by the evil (or is he?) Dr. Frankenstein. It's fun all the way through, but you just haven't lived until you've seen the animated Phyllis Diller belting out "You're Different" and cat fighting with the doctor's assistant in white go go boots!
