August 3 - August 16:
Coming this week: Some of our Velveteen Lounge films were featured in the Hot Rod Hula Hop film festival, which was very fun and flattering!
July 27 - August 2:
Fletch (1985)
Chevy Chase, Joe Don Baker
Tuesdays are Movie Nite here at the Lounge (at least in the summer, until dance class starts again) and I was so depressed on Tuesday that about all I was up to was this movie, which I've seen a dozen times, but remains funny. My favorite lines remain "I don't like to do business on the lanai," to his ex-wife's attorney, who's waiting on his fire escape for him when he tries to sneak in to his apartment, and "Look, defenseless babies!," when he's trying to get the Doberman that's chasing him off of his car.
July 20 - July 26:
Big Fish (2004)
Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Jessica Lange, Billy Crudup
This film was recommended to me and I was a little concerned at first, thinking I wasn't going to get into it, but I ended up loving it and bawling like a baby at the end (in a good way). Edward Bloom (Finney) is dying and his son, Will, who stopped speaking to him three years earlier, because he believes the tall tales Edward has been telling him all his life have been lies, comes home for a last visit. He believes that his father is a stranger and suspects the worst about him and his past. Turns out the stories may have been a little embellished, but they were more or less true and Edward was a great hero to many. I've been thinking for days about the film's message. Is it that living a good, open-hearted life leads to happiness? Is it that we're overly cynical and would benefit from opening our hearts to others more? Probably both and I'm sure others would have different interpretations.
July 13 - July 19:
The Creature Walks Among Us (1956)
Rex Reason, Jeff Morrow, Leigh Snowden
The third and last in the "Creature from the Black Lagoon" series. This one features a hubris-filled, wife-beating surgeon, who decides to capture the Gill Man and turn him into an air breather, thus screwing with evolution. It works, but, as you can imagine, has unintended consequences.
July 5 - July 13:
The Blob (1958)
Steve McQueen, Aneta Corsaut
There is no better way to see this film than at BlobFest, the weekend celebration of all things Blob at the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville, PA, in the theater where several of the scenes were shot. The audience gets really into it. What's not to love about gelatinous ooze falling to earth and devouring all who encounter it? And it's got Steve McQueen (or, as he was known at this point in his career, Steven)!
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
Julie Adams, Richard Carlson, Richard Denning
Another one I never get tired of (if you've been to our house you've no doubt already surmised this). This was my third or fourth time seeing it in 3-D. It was the second feature after The Blob at BlobFest and it's always fun to see it in a classic theater, with a bunch of other '50s horror fans. It was introduced by Ricou "the Gill Man in the underwater scenes" Browning, which was an additional treat.
