October 26 - November 1:
The Paul Lynde Halloween Special (1976)
Paul Lynde, Margaret Hamilton, Florence Henderson, KISS
We watched this "must be seen to be believed" DVD not once, but twice this week, because we just HAD to show Zach, even though we'd seen it the night before. It is a spectacle of cheese, with horrendously bad sketches, three songs by KISS, which had absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the show, although the painful banter between them and Lynde is hysterical, Florence Henderson singing a soprano disco version of "That Old Black Magic," Billy Barty repeatedly kicking Lynde in the shins and a cameo by Donny and Marie. Best $6 I've spent all week!
October 19 - October 25:
As it turns out, we were way too busy to watch anything this week but The Mary Tyler Moore Show on Monday night and IT! The Terror from Beyond Space while fairly distracted, working on our Halloween costumes.
September 28 - October 19:
The Mad Miss Manton (1938)
Barbara Stanwyck, Henry Fonda
Socialite Melsa Manton spots an escaping murderer and a dead body while out walking her purebred pooches late one night. The police don't believe her, especially when the body goes missing, so it's up to her and her debutante pals to solve the crime. Hilarious!
September 21 - September 27:
Owing (you should pardon the expression) to the financial crisis, this week we watched 2006's In Debt We Trust, which predicted exactly what we're seeing now. We're also halfway through Maxed Out, another very similar documentary, also from 2006, which said this was coming. Apparently nobody in a position of power listened. Both are highly recommended.
September 14 - September 20:
Having spent most of the week at or preparing for the Northeast Tiki Tour, no movies got watched here at the Lounge, however, we DID get to see Revenge of the Creature in a friend's motel room on the tour in 16mm, plus Paul showed Super 8 horror films in our room!
September 7 - September 13:
The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer (1947)
Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, Shirley Temple
One great thing about sewing all day is that you can have TCM on and it doesn't distract from your focus. In fact, it might even enhance it. Believe it or not, I'd never actually seen this post-war tale of a teenager who falls for a ladies' man artist. Zany mayhem ensues when he's asked to go along and pretend to love her back, so that she'll lose interest more quickly.
Gigi (1958)
Leslie Caron, Louis Jourdan, Maurice Chevalier
I never think of this coming-of-age tale of a young girl, raised to become a kept woman, as one of my favorite musicals, but the music is so great, the performances are so wonderful and it just looks so pretty that I always seem to watch it all the way through whenever it's on!
Royal Wedding (1951)
Fred Astaire, Jane Powell, Peter Lawford
Another movie that's on a lot, but which I never seem to be able to turn off. It's as fluffy as a big pile of whipped cream, but who cares? Isn't that what technicolor dance musicals are all about?
While Paul was off Saturday, playing board games with friends, I also watched a misfit girl double feature of Pretty in Pink and Legally Blonde, one of my perennial favorites. I was particularly in the mood to watch Pretty in Pink, since it involves the misunderstood heroine who sews her own clothes!
