September 27 - October 3:
I can't say we saw fewer losers this week, but at least they were fun losers on The Smoking Gun Presents World's Dumbest, the show that never fails to crack me up. We've also been making our way through disc two of season one of Police Woman, which has zoomed up into my top ten favorite shows, ever.
September 21 - September 26:
The Mini-Skirt Mob (1968)
Diane McBain, Jeremy Slate, Patty McCormack
The description led me to believe I would enjoy this film more than I did. A mini-skirted biker decides to get revenge on her ex-boyfriend for marrying a straightlaced girl from the right side of the tracks. The film is a lot more brutal than I expected and McBain (of TV's Surfside 6) has no redeeming qualities as Shayne, the scorned woman. She and her friends are so cruel that you can't WAIT to see them get theirs in the end, which comes a lot more slowly than you'd hope, due to poor pacing. I wanted to watch something else after this, so we popped in Hawaii Five-O, which we've been watching in order of how the episodes originally showed. It was excellent, as usual, but set in prison, so there was little in the way of Hawaiian scenery or fashion, and it featured Gavin MacLeod as the deranged drug dealer "Big Chicken," leading me to dub this particular evening of viewing "Loser Night" at the Velveteen Lounge Theater.
September 13 - September 20:
Ohana Luau at the Lake ended up having a great film festival, thanks to our friend Jon Mooers, who brought his 16mm projector and a bunch of films! We saw an episode of Hawaiian Eye and a great short film in which the Shriners' Grand Potentate visited Hawaii in 1953, plus a variety of other goodies. Fabulous stuff, thanks, Jon!
September 6 - September 12:
Brewster's Millions (1944)
Dennis O'Keefe, Helen Walker
Neither of us had seen this hilarious satire, which just happened to be on TCM during happy hour last Friday night. A veteran just back from World War II learns that he will inherit $8 million from a distant uncle if he can spend $1 million by his 30th birthday, which happens to be two months away. It's not as easy as it sounds--$1 million went a lot further back then--and he has all kinds of obscure rules he has to follow for dispensing with the cash. Zany mayhem ensues.
