Maybe the picture looks pathetic, but Mother Nature cheated us out of our Friday night happy hour at the Velveteen Lounge, so the most exciting thing I made all week was brownies.

I got this recipe out of Cosmopolitan when we still lived in our first apartment in Queens, when Helen Gurley Brown was still the editor-in-chief. They're supposedly "light" brownies, but they still taste decadent and even have a secret ingredient, which is a tiny bit of coffee. Best of all, since the recipe was aimed at Cosmo girls, it's really easy and the amount of time from thinking about brownies to actually eating a brownie is about 30 minutes. I haven't read Cosmo in 15 years, but this tattered, stained recipe will be with me forever.
